Rogers Hornsby Birthday Tribute (and Present?)

Rogers Hornsby may have played baseball 100 years ago, but his birthday of April 27, 1896 is respected by baseball historians because this Hall of Famer was one of the few batters to ever post a .400 batting average. His HOF BIO is easily impressive, as are his baseball cards. Maybe this is a good birthday present…

Rogers, or Rajah, played in the infield for 23 years mostly at second base. According to the baseball biographic data, he played for the St. Louis Cardinals, New York Giants, Boston Braves, Chicago Cubs and the St. Louis Browns. Hornsby was even a player/manager. His infield .965 fielding percentage was impressive enough, but his Hall of Fame induction was due to his batting prowess — hitting over .400 three different seasons. His 23-season career average ended as .358 with 2,930 hits (listed as 541 doubles, 169 triples and 301 homers) and 1,584 runs.

So how is the best way to celebrate? Maybe by buying a Rogers Hornsby playing-days baseball card?

This 1933 Goudey #119 is one of two cards of Rajah in that year’s Goudey issue. Most of the prices for PSA 1 and SGC 1 have been ranging from just under $300 to about $425 when they come up for sale. And what about the population reports — PSA has just 829 examples, and there are 342 graded by SGC and another 59 graded by BVG.

Take this newly graded SGC 1 example for $395.00 (image below). Offers will be considered, but much discounting a Hornsby playing days card generally isn’t necessary. Feel free to reach out to jonogg at oggscards dot com via email or @oggscards on Twitter.
